The National Quality Board (NQB) and the Chief Nursing Officer for England have published guidance on safe staffing to ensure that each hospital ward and every shift has the right number of staff on duty to provide patients with safe, good quality care. As part of this we, along with all other hospitals, will display information on each ward about the number of nurses, midwives and care staff we have present on that ward, our planned numbers for that shift and whether we have achieved this. We will also publish a monthly update here on our website.
We also feel it is important that we have the right skills and experience on each ward which takes into account the level of care needed by our patients for each individual area. We regularly carry out "skill mix" reviews and these are reported to the Trust Board twice a year. We will also publish these reports here.
We are committed to providing our patients with safe and effective care and we hope that you find this information helpful. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

If you have any concerns about staffing levels on a specific ward, please contact the ward and ask to speak to the Senior Sister or Directorate Senior Nurse.
Part of the reason we are gathering and publishing this information is so that we can monitor our staffing levels to ensure they are adequate and provide the level and standard of care required. The information is reviewed by the Board each month and a Board report is developed, which highlights areas where staffing may need to be improved and what we plan to do to ensure improvements take place.
A more detailed view on the exact number of planned and actual hours can be downloaded here:
Every six months we will carry out a skill mix review that takes into account staffing numbers, experience and the roles and responsibilities needed on each ward to ensure we continue to provide safe and compassionate care. These reviews will be published twice a year and can be viewed here.
